Not far south of McLaren Vale, and a few minutes over Willunga Hill you’ll find the Green Tank Gallery. It’s situated on Woodcone Road just south of Mt Compass and four hundred metres west of the Victor Harbor road.
The Green Tank Gallery is adjacent John’s new studio. It has been purpose built and complements John’s studio from which he paints and teaches. John and the gallery are part of the Fleurieu Art Trail which is signified by the purple flag you’ll see at numerous locations within the area.
There is a constant display of high quality work ranging from impressionistic to contemporary landscapes from the region or farther afield, such as Victoria or West Australia’s Kimberley and Pilbara. You will even find paintings from England, France and Italy or the occasional portrait.
New paintings from the studio continually find their way into the gallery and visitors are encouraged to wander around the studio to see what’s in progress or in storage.
You will even come across the many en plein air painting sketches that John uses for more detailed studio work, along with numerous studies and life drawings of the figure which are for sale and frame up to look fantastic.
The gallery has taken its name from the now defunct large square green water tank that sits just east of the property and on the crest of the hill behind the dwelling.
Many people have spent an hour or more exploring the art here, as it is a must see on your next visit to the Fleurieu Peninsula.
